1Death Highway – Extremely Dangerous Highway
The Yungas del Norte highway is known as the “Highway of Death” for all the reasons you can guess. Driving on this 69-kilometre highway is extremely dangerous due to fog, landslides, waterfalls, and cliffs that drop 610 meters at every turn. Until 1994, almost 300 drivers died each year, which justifies its nickname and places it on the list of the most dangerous places in the world.
The highway stretches to connect the Amazon jungle with the capital, surrounded by mountainous terrain. Therefore, it was not uncommon for merchants to crowd trucks and buses to try to sell their wood and crops in the area. However, the sharp curves were not wide enough for each vehicle, causing many trucks to go down with people and their livelihoods.
